City of Coachella Fire Station #79 on Dec. 16, 2021.

Plans for a new fire station in the City of Coachella advanced on Wednesday after the council unanimously approved the lease of temporary office and housing facilities for the department’s crew once construction begins.

With the exception of Mayor Steven Hernandez, who recused himself from the vote due to owning property nearby, the city Ccouncil agreed to enter a lease with Williams Scotsman Inc. for a mobile office trailer and temporary housing of firefighters once the renovation and expansion of Fire Station 79 is underway. No company has been chosen to begin construction yet.

“We began the bid process on April 18 and we have a proposed mandatory pre-bid meeting on May 4. That’s when any prospective bidders who want to look at the project can do the walkthrough of the fire station and (will) be able to review the plans with staff,” said Andrew Simmons, the city engineer.
