Two contract workers burned in a natural gas explosion at a minor league baseball stadium in Lake Elsinore were installing dryers in a locker room when the explosion occurred Friday afternoon, a Southern California Gas Company spokesman said on Saturday, May 20.

Plumbers were purging a gas line at Lake Elsinore Diamond, but the line did not burst and the explosion was not the result of a failure of equipment, said Ahmad Solomon, spokesman for SoCal Gas.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department continued to investigate the blast Saturday, but had no updates as of 5:30 p.m., Sgt. Deirdre Vickers said.

The two workers were taken to Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar for treatment, but their conditions as of Saturday were not provided.

The blast occurred around 4:20 p.m. Friday.

The Lake Elsinore Storm canceled its Saturday game against the Inland Empire 66ers “to ensure the safety of our facility, fans and players,”, the organization said in a statement. Those who purchased tickets can use those tickets as vouchers for a future game.

“While contractors were installing new equipment in the team facility, there was an unfortunate accident related to the work being done,” the team’s statement read, adding that the damages were “isolated to a very small area within the new building.”

No players or staff were injured.

Sunday’s game is to be played as scheduled, according to the statement.
